Program Purpose: 

AAAS provides Science and Technology Policy Fellowships in six areas to provide accomplished scientists and engineers the opportunity to participate in and contribute their knowledge and analytical skills to the federal policymaking process, while learning firsthand about the intersection of science and policy.

Program Description: 

Each year 150 Fellows, representing a broad array of science and engineering fields, bring to the program their common interest in the intersection of science and policy, and their willingness to apply their technical training in a new arena. Fellows work in congressional offices or executive branch agencies in the following arenas: Diplomacy, Security and Development; Energy, Environment and Agriculture; Health, Education and Human Services; and Global Stewardship.

Program Benefits:

Fellows also participate in a year-round professional development program that includes skill-building and networking events.

Application Process: 

Applicants should address how their specific scientific specialty relates to policy issues and how it can be applied in government decision-making.

Applicant Profile: 

Candidates from a broad array of backgrounds, career stages and ages, and a diversity of geographic, disciplinary, gender, and ethnic perspectives as well as disability status are encouraged to apply. Strong candidates demonstrate exceptional competence in their specialty appropriate to their career stage, display a commitment to apply their scientific or technical expertise to serve society, and exhibit awareness of the political, economic and social issues that influence policy.

Eligibility: 

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in social and behavioral sciences, medical and health sciences, biological, physical or earth sciences, computational sciences and mathematics, or engineering disciplines. Candidates in engineering disciplines with a master's degree and at least three years of post-degree professional experience may also apply.

Citizenship: 

U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Program Deadline: 

Usually early December.
