Program Purpose and Description: 

The College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway offers postgraduate scholarships to support full-time PhD research within the Structured PhD programs of the College. Scholarships are awarded for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years, according to the original date of the applicant's registration for the PhD degree, and based on satisfactory progress to degree.

‌Scholarships may be awarded across the following disciplines: Education, Geography, Archaeology, Creative Writing, Drama, English, Film and Digital Media, History, Irish Studies, Journalism, Old and Middle Irish, Philosophy, Music, Celtic Civilisation, Children's Studies, Classics, French, Gaeilge, German, Italian, Spanish, Political Science and Sociology, Global Women’s Studies, Psychology.

Scholarships may thus be awarded across any of the following associated disciplines: Education,Geography, Archaeology, Creative Writing, Drama, English, Film and Digital Media, History, Irish Studies, Journalism, Music, Old and Middle Irish, Philosophy, Celtic Civilisation, Children’s Studies, Classics, French, Gaeilge, German, Italian, Spanish, Political Science and Sociology, Global Women’s Studies, Psychology.

Program Benefits: 

The value of the award is approximately 15,000 Euros annually, inclusive of stipend and fees.

Application Process: 

Applications, which include a work sample, may be completed either in English or Irish. For applicants whose first language is not English or Irish, a language proficiency assessment may be required. Application forms and terms and conditions are available from: http://www.nuigalway.ie/arts/

Applicant Profile: 

Preference will be given to those embarking on the first year of their PhD program.

Eligibility: 

Galway Doctoral Research Scholarships are awarded only to those who will be full-time students and will engage in full-time research during the period of the Scholarship. The minimum qualification for the award of a scholarship is a first class or higher second class honors primary degree -- or the equivalent -- from a recognized institution in a relevant discipline. Higher degree results shall normally take precedence over the results of the primary degree. The applicant must also have an established proficiency in English or in Irish.

Selection Criteria: 

Applications are assessed on the basis of academic excellence and their alignment with the strategic research priorities of individual Schools. Preference is given to those embarking on the first year of their PhD. Programme.
