Program Purpose:

Samuel Huntington was President and CEO of the New England Electric System, which later merged with National Grid. Deeply interested in public service, following college graduation and before attending law school, Huntington taught in Nigeria. The Huntington Public Service Award was established by his friends to allow other students to realize similar experiences and to provide public service.

Program Description:

The Huntington Public Service Award provides $15,000 to a graduating senior to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world. The award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity in the US or abroad before proceeding on to graduate school or a career.

Program Benefits:

Half of the award is paid at the beginning of the project; the remaining $5,000 is awarded upon receipt of a 6-month progress report.

Application Process:

Applicants' proposals should establish their project's public good and address its sustainability; they should also provide a budget and schedule of specific measurable objectives. The proposed project may be undertaken by the student alone or by working through an established – charitable, religious, educational, governmental, or other public service – organization.

Eligibility:

Graduating senior.

Citizenship:

Students of any nationality may apply.

Program Deadline:

Usually mid-January.

How To Apply:

Students or alumni, as applicable, may apply directly to this program. Applicants are encouraged, however, to work with SF State's fellowship advisor well in advance of the program deadline to perfect their application essays and other materials.
