Program Purpose: 

The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The program supports selected students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including students with high financial need, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.

Program Description: 

The program provides awards to students receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at two or four year colleges or universities to participate in study abroad programs of at least four weeks in over 80 countries worldwide. Recipients of the Gilman Scholarship are eligible to apply for a Critical Need Language Supplement to study one of the following languages: Arabic (all dialects); Chinese (all dialects); Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek); Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki); Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi); Korean; Russian; or Swahili.

Program Benefits: 

Scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded, depending on the length of study and student need, towards the cost of program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare. The average award is $4,000. Students who receive the scholarship are eligible to apply for an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement for a total possible award of up to $8,000.

Applicant Profile: 

Students with high financial need, community college transfer students, students with disabilities, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, as well those in fields underrepresented in study abroad programs (such as the sciences and engineering) are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: 

Undergraduates.

Obligations: 

Recipients are required to carry out a follow-on project that promotes the Gilman Scholarship in their academic institutions or communities.

Selection Criteria: 

The program strongly encourages (1) students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand; (2) students from community colleges to apply; (3) students to study abroad for longer periods of time; (4) students in non-traditional fields of study such as the sciences and engineering, to apply.

U.S. citizens only.
