Program Description and Benefits: 

The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are three-to-four week programs in June/July for U.S. undergraduates. Successful candidates attend a Fulbright orientation on arrival to the United Kingdom, which is held at the host university; the aim of the orientation is to introduce participants to the social, political, economic and cultural issues of the UK and to meet fellow Fulbright Summer Institute participants. Participants explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university.

Depending on the Institute, students will have the opportunity to: Study alongside leading academics and professionals; develop knowledge in specific fields; experience cultural and social events; visit museums, galleries, castles, battlegrounds, stately homes and areas of scenic beauty; receive credit to transfer to their home institution; meet people from across the U.S. and the world; become an ambassador for studying in the UK, for the Fulbright Commission and their host institution.

The majority of participant costs are covered. The Institute covers U.S.-UK round-trip airfare; tuition and fees at the host institution; accommodations. n some cases a small daily allowance for meals. On completion of the Institute, participants are expected to return to the U.S. to continue their education.

Application Process: 

Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview in the Spring semester. The grant does not provide expenses relating to the finalist interview.

Applicant Profile: 

Candidates must be able to provide evidence of leadership qualities and initiative, academic ability, character, adaptability and ambassadorial qualities, as well as interest in the UK and its culture. A minimum 3.7 GPA is required.

Eligibility: 

To be eligible, students must: Be at least 18 years old at the start of the program; be a U.S. citizen and possess a U.S. passport but little or no prior study or travel outside of the US; have a minimum GPA of 3.7, and at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Summer Institute. Must be able to participate in the program in its entirety.

Obligations: 

The grant does not provide expenses relating to the finalist interview, and participants must pay for their own medical/travel insurance. Awardees must conduct themselves lawfully and respectfully, and participate in the Institute for the full length of the summer program.

Selection Criteria: 

In addition to academic excellence, the Institute looks for applications are from well-rounded students who have ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright program, and a plan to give back to the U.S. on their return.

Citizenship: 

U.S. citizenship and a U.S. passport are required.

Program Deadline: 

Usually in early February. Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview later in the Spring semester.
