Program Purpose: 

The ASA Fellowship, co-funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Drug Abuse, seeks to ensure diverse and highly trained leadership in national mental health and drug abuse research agendas.

Program Description: 

ASA provides one fellowship per year to a talented student of color in sociology for doctoral study of any of its core areas of mental health and drug abuse research.

Supported Fields: 

Supported areas of mental health and drug abuse research include: schizophrenia, depression, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, drug abuse and addiction across the life course, stigma associated with mental disorders and drug abuse, disparities in access, treatment, and service delivery, assessments of risk and protective factors of mental disorders and abuse.

Program Benefits: 

The 12-month fellowship, funded at $20,772 per year, is typically renewable for a total of 3 years.

Eligibility: 

Senior – from an ethnic group underrepresented in the academy – accepted into or a graduate student enrolled in a Ph.D. program in sociology. This program must have a strong background in mental health research.

Citizenship: 

U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.

Program Deadline: 

Usually in January.
