Application Overview

Overview of the California Pre-Doctoral Program Application Process:

  1. Seek a Faculty Sponsor (an SF State faculty member in your field who knows you well and is willing to support your application to the Pre-Doctoral Program, and to serve as your mentor during the award year);

  2. Ask your Faculty Sponsor to provide you with an in-depth recommendation.

  3. Complete an online application (see Application Instructions).

  4. In collaboration with your Faculty Sponsor, develop a “Student Plan” (budget) for the funded activities you will engage in to prepare for entering a doctoral program;

  5. Compose your application essays in consultation with your Faculty Sponsor;

  6. If you would like feedback on your application essays, seek a meeting with Dr. Joy Viveros, SF State's Campus Coordinator for the Program, by emailing her at fellows1@sfsu.edu.

  7. At least one week before the campus deadlineschedule a meeting with Dr. Viveros to review and approve your application.

  8. Upload your transcripts, essays, Faculty Sponsor recommendation form and recommendation letter to your online application.

  9. Submit your online application by the campus deadline.
